Course information

On this course we aim to cover how our diverse and complex world works, investigating and helping students to gain an understanding of world politics and the major events that have shaped the post-1945 world.

We will cover the evolution and interaction of different states and societies around the globe, exploring the history of world politics since World War II. We consider how foreign policy decision-makers and international organisations respond in the face of war, social movements, terrorism, political struggles, democratic advances and setbacks.

Opportunities to apply for an international experience, which in the past have included trips to Germany, Costa Rica and the United States.

Teaching is based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, tutorials, workshops, online discussions and web-based activities. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: some modules will based on assessment at 50% coursework and 50% examinations, others will be coursework only. 

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed.

In a typical week you will have up to 14 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour tutorial each week
  • Medium group teaching: 5 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week
  • Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week

Additionally, you will be expected to complete 23 hours each week studying and revising in your own time.

In this course you will have the opportunity to take an overseas study trip. For example, previous students spent a week in Sicily examining how the anti-mafia organisation Libera has been working to combat organised crime.

In 2015/16, we were able to provide a total of 2101 experiences abroad that lasted at least five days, 76% of which were our own organised trips for undergraduates and 23% from postgraduate travel.

Much of this travel is made possible through our Global Leaders Programme, which enables students to prepare for the challenges of the global employment market, as well as strengthening and developing their broader personal and professional skills.
