Course information

This course offers an opportunity to design for different sizes, purposes and contexts in interior design products, architecture and transport.

We cover interior products, such as furniture, lighting, wallpaper, carpets and colour schemes, as well as more traditional architectural, spatial interior design, incorporating retail, commercial and domestic settings.

We will cover how to create innovative product design solutions in a range of styles and media, appropriate to the specific audience and purpose, taking account of critical factors, such as usability, materials, ecology, desirability, technological feasibility and professional constraints.

During the first year of the course you will learn 2D and 3D techniques for generating, developing and communicating innovative product design ideas and concepts using manual and digital media supported by historical, environmental and technological contextual studies.

Add+vantage

The focus on preparing students for successful futures sets Coventry apart as a university.

The Add+vantage modules teach a range of work experience and extra-curricular activities that are taken each year, and broaden students knowledge and skills within a work focused environment. There is a very wide range of Add+vantage free-choice subject areas, and they are arranged in themes.

Overview

During the second year you will focus on your own particular strengths and interests. Learning will involve 3D form development, branding and design for different market places as well as (CAD). You will also learn and how to evaluate your work in relation to identified objectives.

Overview

The Professional Enhancement Year; the third year of the four-year degree, involves entry to a national or international competition and involvement in collaborative projects with industry. There are opportunities to apply for placements in industry, or to study abroad in an international exchange placement programme.

Overview

The final year of your BA Hons may include entry to a national design competition, while the final year for the MDes qualification (4th year) may include research and design management modules. Both BA Hons and MDes qualifications conclude with a major design project.

At the end of their degree students are expected to exhibit in our prestigious Degree Show.

  • Visiting industry professionals who take an active part in your education and offer a visiting speaker programme.
  • Excellent facilities and use of substantial workshops and equipment for 3D model-making to develop your practical skills and expertise to create prototype your designs.

Support applying for placement opportunities with previous examples including Seymour Powell, Cambridge Consultants, Design Works and 1HQ.

You will have a base studio with your year group and course colleagues, which is where you will learn through design exploration, discussion, sketching and making. There will also be a series of lectures with associated seminars and workshop practical classes.

In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • Practical or project work: 45%
  • Coursework, tests, essays: 30%
  • Presentations, posters etc: 15%
  • Working in groups etc: 10%

In a typical week you will have up to 18 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of tutorials each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 4 hours of medium group lectures and seminars each week.
  • Large group teaching: 10 hours of lectures each week.

Additionally, you will be expected to complete 20 hours of studying and practical work in your own time each week.

Students have the opportunity to apply for international placements in industry with the benefit of the department’s well-established associations and contacts.

Those taking the four-year course, which includes the ‘Professional Enhancement Year,’ have the opportunity to apply for longer placements lasting for varying periods of time up to a maximum of one year that may be in the UK.

Examples of the academic placements are: Delft University, Holland, Oulu Game LAB, Finland, Strate Ecole de Design à Sévres, Paris, Universidad Europea de Madrid, Spain and Zhejiang University of Media and Communications, China.

In the past students have found work placements at: EMO Design: Italy, PDG Ltd, MMID: Germany, GlaxoSmithKline.

Did you know we help more students travel internationally than any other UK university according to data from the experts in higher education data and analysis, HESA?

In 2015/16, we were able to provide a total of 2101 experiences abroad that lasted at least five days, 76% of which were our own organised trips for undergraduates and 23% from postgraduate travel.

Much of this travel is made possible through our Global Leaders Programme, which enables students to prepare for the challenges of the global employment market, as well as strengthening and developing their broader personal and professional skills.

We're committed to communicating study costs clearly to make sure you're not faced with having to make any unexpected payments.

This is why our ‘Flying Start’ package provides you with a few course essentials. Your full-time fee for an undergraduate degree will cover the following:

Laser prints

1,000 A4 sides of black and white laser printing credits per year.
