Course information

This course aims to provide a solid foundation in business studies within a cross-cultural context. Focusing on French and/or Spanish, widely regarded as two of the world’s most important languages (https://corelanguages.com/top-ten-important-languages/), there is also the option to choose a third language, such as Italian, German or Japanese. You’ll also be introduced to a selection of other languages, including Mandarin and Arabic.

Language study focuses on the language of business, while the study of business, management and marketing covers knowledge, skills and competences within business organisations and an awareness of specific business cultures and contexts.

Overview

In your first year you will study French or Spanish as languages for business. You will also receive an introduction to business organisations.

  • Expert teaching, often carried out by native speakers of the language you are learning in a Languages Centre.
  • A practical and career-focused orientation throughout your course by enhancing your critical thinking and developing the communication skills that employers want.
  • The option to spend a year studying or working overseas, which provides you with an international experience that many businesses are looking for when employing a graduate.

Your languages will be taught in small and medium-sized groups; your business subjects will be delivered via lectures and seminar groups.

In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • Coursework, tests, essays: 40%
  • Formal examinations: 35%
  • Practical or project work: 10%
  • Presentations, posters 10%
  • Group work 5%

 

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed.

In a typical week you will have up to 15 contact hours of teaching and this could break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 3 hours each week to practise speaking with a language assistant as well as tutorials (individual or in small groups) and individual project supervision in your final year.
  • Medium-group teaching: 10 hours of workshops, seminars and language classes each week.
  • Large-group teaching: 2 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to spend 25 hours each week studying and revising in your own time, including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.

The whole course is, by its very nature, “international”. Overseas placements, study abroad and links with international associates are all an essential part of the course.

Students normally spend one academic year either working or studying in one or two countries.

The University has links with a number of companies, such as Kuoni Destination Management Madrid, Contemporary Art Centre (Malaga), AIM Spain S.L., BNP, Airbus and Renault. It is also currently creating new links with companies in China.

In 2015/16, we were able to provide a total of 2101 experiences abroad that lasted at least five days, 76% of which were our own organised trips for undergraduates and 23% from postgraduate travel.

Much of this travel is made possible through our Global Leaders Programme, which enables students to prepare for the challenges of the global employment market, as well as strengthening and developing their broader personal and professional skills.
